Counseling is a way of helping people find ways of dealing more effectively with their problems. Counseling to by a skilled, trained and caring person.
The school’s counseling service is open to every member of the Carmel Family. The centre counsels students with learning disabilities, hyperactivity behavioral problems etc. right from Nursery to High School. Through discussion, in a safe place, in confidence, with someone trust worthy, worries are shared. When distress is reduced worries are easier to understand accept and deal with. At times just giving a patient ear to a child’s problem has actually helped us solve the problem. Parents have expressed their gratitude for helping their children understand and sort out their problems.
Counseling at Carmel
Lack of time, nuclear family where status, wealth and earnings only play a major role, children of today are deprived of their childhood.
The evils of childhood of the present generation are :
- Time bound TV schedules
- Parents money oriented life – children in crèche
- Packed syllabus and absence of team games.
- Parents having no time to support their children and fulfill their needs and
aspirations.
- Parents having no time to extend and express love and affection which has become dearer to the child of today.
- The love and affection are being compensated by chocolates, costly gifts, huge pocket money which ultimately lands the child in ‘no man’s land’.
This sort of materialistic life is creating emotional stress on the present generation which hinders the mental growth of children. Due to lack of love, affection and attention the child automatically turns out to be problematic one without having an idea as to how to face or solve the problems or come out of problems diplomatically. May it be lack of attention or over protection, the child is deprived of something. Thus such children may develop insecure felling or under confidence. The child would become aggressive an introvert, lazy, lethargic, and utterly confused…..
‘Counseling Unit’ – The word counsel itself denotes make to understand. The counseling unit has become a part and parcel of Carmel School.
- A Student of Class X who had fear for examination faced the final board exams boldly.
- A student of Std. IX who had problems at home turned out to be problematic to his friends and teachers. By virtue of counseling by Mrs. Bharathi Jagannath the student was able to accept the reality, understand his role to play and his responsibility as a member of the family.
- Apart from the above mentioned, there are many more such cases dealt by Mrs. Bharathi during the academic year 2003-03 reaping fruitful results. This counseling facility is being given to special students of Nursery to Std. X who need that extra personal inter-action to bring them out of their shell.
This has greatly helped the students and parents as well, in coordinating with student – parent – teacher.
How ever counseling alone cannot solve all the problems, but of course assist the student in understanding the problem, know the reality, adjust to the situation and accept the things as they come in life.
